Virgina
Feminine · “from a Roman family name”
Virgina is Virginia with a letter missing, and the missing letter is invisible in speech and nearly invisible on the page. Readers do not process names one letter at a time; they take in a shape and match it against what they expect, which is why a dropped vowel in the middle of a long familiar word can survive being read thousands of times without anybody noticing.

The story of Virgina
The first English child born in the Americas was named after the colony, which had been named after the queen who chartered it: Virginia Dare, born on Roanoke Island in the summer of fifteen eighty-seven. Her grandfather was the governor, who sailed for England for supplies within weeks of her birth and was prevented from returning for three years by a war. When he finally got back the settlement was empty, the houses dismantled, and a word carved on a post. Nobody has ever established what happened to any of them, the child included, and the search has been going on for four hundred years. It is the founding mystery of English America, and the name attached to it went into the register as a first name almost immediately, which is why it appears in the earliest American records already established.
Meaningscholars disagree
from a Roman family name
The colony was named for a queen, and the name it was built on is a Roman family name rather than the Latin word for a maiden, though the two have been confused for centuries and the confusion is itself very old. The family name has no established meaning of its own. So the reading offered in most name books rests on a Latin pun that Romans were already making, and it should be presented as a pun rather than as an etymology.
