The story of Lysandra
Scientific vocabulary was built in the nineteenth century largely from Greek roots, and the choice was deliberate: Greek supplied a stock of morphemes that could be combined precisely and that belonged to no living nation. Lysis was one of the most useful. Analysis is a loosening-up, in the sense of taking apart. Paralysis is a loosening alongside, a slackening of one side. Dialysis is a separating-through, coined for the laboratory process in 1861 and applied to the kidney machine in the twentieth century. Catalysis, coined by Berzelius in 1836, is a loosening-down. Electrolysis is loosening by electricity. Each was made by someone who knew what the root meant, which is why the terms are mutually consistent, and none of them existed before the modern period. The name is older than all of them by two thousand years.
