The story of Nona
Roman numeral names were an ordinary solution to a real problem in families of ten or twelve children, and several of them survived into modern European use: Octavia, Decimus, Quintus. Nona also carried a mythological weight as one of the Parcae. Nineteenth-century American families revived the Latin numeral names alongside other classical vocabulary, and Nona peaked in American records around 1890.
Meaning
ninth
From the Latin nonus, 'ninth', feminine nona. Roman naming used numerals freely for daughters — Secunda, Tertia, Quinta, Octavia, Decima — and the practice is well documented. Nona was also the name of one of the three Roman Fates, the one who spun the thread of life.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent and points at a documented Roman naming practice.
- It carries a Fate as well as a numeral, which is a substantial mythological anchor.
- Two clean syllables and no pronunciation risk in English.
- The literal meaning is an ordinal number, which some families will find thin.
- It is period-coded to the late nineteenth century in American records.
