Clementina
Feminine · “Latin clemens”
Mercy was a Roman state virtue with a temple. Clementia was voted a shrine in Caesar's honor, because his policy of pardoning defeated enemies was a deliberate political program and he wanted it recognized as one. Clemency in Rome was not softness; it was the display of a power so complete that it could afford to withhold itself.

The story of Clementina
Caesar's clementia was policy. In the civil wars he made a point of pardoning opponents rather than proscribing them, in explicit contrast to Sulla a generation earlier, and it worked well enough that the Senate voted a temple to the virtue with a statue of Caesar clasping its hand. Seneca later wrote a whole treatise, De Clementia, addressed to the young Nero, arguing that mercy is the specific virtue of absolute power because only someone who could kill can be praised for not doing so. That is a harder and more political idea than the modern word carries. The name entered Christian use through Clement of Rome, traditionally the fourth bishop there, and the Latin virtue was quietly reinterpreted as the Christian one. Clementine, the French form, gave its name to the fruit, which was raised by a French missionary in Algeria around 1900.
