Evalena
Feminine · “Hebrew Chavvah with Greek Helena”
The Southern American double name is a grammar, not a whim. A first element drawn from a wide pool joins a second element drawn from a very small one: Mae, Lee, Jo, Ann, Sue, Lou, Lena. Evalena is one of those constructions, and once you know the rule you can hear it in a hundred names from the same region and decade.

The story of Evalena
The compound pattern is documented across the American South and Appalachia from the mid nineteenth century and is distinct from the German compound tradition that produced Anneliese. The German rule joins two short forms into a single word; the Southern rule joins a first name to a small closed set of second elements, and those second elements are almost never used first. Mae, Jo, Sue, Ann, Lou, Nell and Lena appear at the end of hundreds of combinations and at the front of almost none. The result is a naming system with a fixed slot structure, which is exactly what modern coinage rediscovered a century later. What distinguishes the older layer is that both elements were real names with real histories, so the compound is two inheritances joined rather than two sounds. Evalena is Hebrew plus Greek by way of Tennessee.
Meaning
Hebrew Chavvah with Greek Helena
Eva is the Latin and Greek form of Hebrew Chavvah, Eve, which Genesis itself glosses as the mother of all living, from a root for living. Lena is a short form of Helena or Magdalena; Helena's own meaning is genuinely unknown despite many proposals. Evalena joins the two in the American compound pattern and is not a name in any European tradition. It peaks in 1887.
