Where it comes from

The story of Lynnette

The Mabinogion was translated into English by Charlotte Guest between 1838 and 1845, and it gave Victorian writers a stock of Welsh names to work with. Tennyson used several in the Idylls of the King, and Gareth and Lynette, published in 1872, put this one into circulation; his spelling, with a y and a French-looking ending, made it look like an ordinary English name rather than a Welsh one. It became genuinely popular in the mid-twentieth century, and the doubled n of Lynnette is a further American respelling that assimilates it fully to the Lynn family. Its best year in United States records is 1966.

idol, image

The Welsh Eluned, and its short form Luned, is usually derived from eilun, an idol or image, though the derivation is not secure. Tennyson's respelling as Lynette detached the name from that etymology entirely, and English readers have since connected it to Lynn, from a word for a pool, and to the French diminutive -ette, neither of which has anything to do with the Welsh.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lynnette went to 17 girls in 2025, but Lynette and Linette are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 89, which makes it the 871st most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,675 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 18,059 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Lynnette itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented literary creation with a known author and a known year.
  • Lynn and Nettie are two short forms belonging to two different periods.
  • End-stressed, which is uncommon in English girls' names.
What to consider
  • Lynette with one n is the standard spelling.
  • The Welsh original is unrecognizable from this form.
  • It reads as a name of the 1950s and 1960s in American ears.
