Where it comes from

The story of Lynette

Luned appears in the medieval Welsh tale of Owain, and Tennyson took her into the Idylls of the King in 1872 as Lynette, the heroine of Gareth and Lynette — a woman who spends most of the poem being witheringly rude to the knight escorting her, and marries him anyway. The name entered English use from there and peaked in America in the mid-1960s.

idol, image

Tennyson's Lynette is a reshaping of the Welsh Luned or Eluned, generally read from eilun, 'idol' or 'image'. The English form has also been read as Lynn plus the French -ette diminutive, which is how most modern bearers understand it. The Welsh route is the documented one.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lynette went to 66 girls in 2025, but Lynnette and Linette are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 89, which makes it the 871st most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,736 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 18,059 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 24,353 for Lynette itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuine medieval Welsh name with a documented Victorian literary reworking.
  • The Arthurian heroine is one of the more entertaining figures in the Idylls.
  • Lyn and Nettie are two short forms at very different registers.
What to consider
  • The Welsh original is a quite different name in sound.
  • It is closely dated to the middle of the twentieth century in American records.
