Verona
Feminine
Verona is a city with a Roman arena still standing and still used, and a name older than Rome: it is pre-Roman and nobody has explained it. English-speaking families gave it to daughters around the turn of the twentieth century, when Italian place names were fashionable, and some of them meant Veronica instead.

The story of Verona
Verona was a Roman colony and kept its arena, its gates and its street plan; it later became famous to English speakers as the setting of a play about two feuding families, which is how most of them first meet the name. American parents at the turn of the twentieth century used Italian city names freely, giving Verona, Genoa, Sienna and Florence. Some Veronas in the records are that; others are Veronicas shortened, and the two cannot always be told apart.

Not established
The city name is pre-Roman and has no accepted etymology; Etruscan and Celtic sources have both been proposed. Separately, many American Veronas are short forms of Veronica, which comes either from a Greek name meaning bringer of victory or from a Latin phrase about a true image.

Where Verona is headed
Verona should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- It names a real city with buildings that have been standing for two thousand years.
- Vera and Rona are ready short forms and both are complete names.
- Three open syllables make it easy to say in English and Italian alike.
- The city's name has no recoverable meaning, so anything given for it is a guess.
- It is best known to English speakers as the setting of a tragedy, which colors the first hearing.
- Verona and Veronica are close enough that the second gets written by mistake.
