The story of Kristiana
Christina became queen of Sweden at six, on the death of Gustavus Adolphus, and ruled in her own right from 1644. She was formidably educated, brought Descartes to Stockholm, where he caught a chill in her early-morning philosophy lessons and died, and refused every proposal of marriage. In 1654 she abdicated in favor of her cousin, left the country dressed as a man, and converted to Catholicism at Innsbruck, an act that in the leading Protestant power of Europe was close to unthinkable. She settled in Rome, where she assembled one of the great art and manuscript collections, patronized Bernini and Scarlatti, and involved herself in Roman politics for thirty years. She died in 1689 and is buried in the Vatican grottoes, one of very few women given that honor.
