The story of Christiana
Christiana was in use across medieval Europe and became particularly common in Scandinavia and the German-speaking world, where it was a royal name; Oslo was called Christiania for nearly three centuries after a Danish-Norwegian king rebuilt it. In English it is best known from the second part of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, where Christiana follows her husband's road with their children and is given the better half of the book by many readers. It has stayed in steady use in English-speaking countries and in West Africa, particularly Ghana and Nigeria.
Meaning
follower of Christ
Latin christiana is the feminine of christianus, 'of Christ', from Greek christos, 'anointed' — which itself translates the Hebrew mashiach, messiah. Both words describe the smearing with oil by which kings and priests were installed. The reading is documented and undisputed.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Edie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Christiana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Edie climbed just as high around 1963, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Edie's path sketches the road Christiana is walking now.
