Neomi
Feminine · “Hebrew "pleasantness”
Neomi is Naomi with the vowels rearranged, and the rearrangement follows the sound rather than the Hebrew. Naomi in American English is nay-OH-mee, and writing the first two letters as Ne- records that first syllable as it is actually said — an e sound, not the ah the Hebrew has.

The story of Neomi
Naomi is one of the two central figures of the Book of Ruth, and the story is unusual in scripture for turning entirely on the loyalty between two women. That kept the name in Jewish use continuously and brought it into Christian use with the Puritans. American spellings have varied a great deal — Naomi, Neomi, Neoma, Noemi and Naoma all appear — because the vowel sequence is genuinely awkward in English. Neomi peaked in 1927, in the same decade as Neoma and Naoma, all recording the same difficulty in different ways.
Meaning
Hebrew "pleasantness, sweetness"
From Hebrew noʿomi, from naʿam, to be pleasant or agreeable. The Book of Ruth makes the meaning explicit: on returning to Bethlehem widowed and bereaved, Naomi asks to be called Mara, bitter, instead — the text turns on the contrast between the two words. The etymology is settled and is stated inside the source.

Pronouncing Neomi
nee-OH-mee
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Hebrew gives noh-oh-MEE with final stress and a different first vowel. Spanish Noemí stresses the last syllable too. The American reading is the odd one out and this spelling records it.

The Almetta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Neomi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Almetta climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Almetta's path sketches the road Neomi is walking now.
Neomi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
