Rosabel
Feminine · “Beautiful rose”
Rosabel is a Victorian coinage, and knowing that is the point. The story of Rosabel
The nineteenth century produced a run of two-element flower and beauty compounds — Rosabel, Rosalind, Rosamund, Annabel, Clarabel, Florabel, Maybelle — and they were genuinely new names, not revivals. What separates them from modern coinages is only that both halves were still transparent: a Victorian reader saw rose and beautiful, whereas a modern reader of Braelynn sees nothing. Rosabel appeared in poetry and in popular song, entered ordinary American use, and peaked in 1885 before the whole family faded together around the First World War.
Meaning
"Beautiful rose", from Latin rosa and bella
The two elements are transparent: Latin rosa, the flower, and bella, beautiful, through Italian and French. Rosabella is the fuller Italian-styled form and Rosabel the English one. Some accounts route the -bel through Isabel or Annabel instead, in which case it carries no independent meaning; the result is the same name either way.
