Our story of Elzie
There is a whole vocabulary of names in the 1880s and 1890s American South that appears nowhere else on earth: Ocie, Vertie, Classie, Ardelia, Elzie, Zelma, Orpha, Docia. They share a small set of parts — an El- or O- opening, a z or a c in the middle, an -ie or -a ending — and they were assembled at home, by families who had a sound in mind and no book to check it against. This is worth stating plainly because it contradicts the common belief that invented names are a modern phenomenon. They are not; the 1890s were as inventive as the 1990s, with a different parts bin. Elzie is a clean specimen: familiar edges, an unusual middle consonant, used for both sexes, and gone within thirty years.
Meaningnot established
Not established
There is no established etymology. Plausible parents include Elsie, itself a Scottish short form of Elspeth and therefore of Elizabeth; Elzada and Elzora, both attested in the same records; and the El- opening common to Ella, Elva and Elmira. The z is the distinctive element and does not come from any of them. Elzie was also used for boys, which argues against a simple Elizabeth derivation.

Pronouncing Elzie
EL-zee
Two syllables, stress on the first, with a genuine Z. Elsie is said the same way in most American speech, because s between a consonant and a vowel is voiced anyway — the z spelling only makes it explicit.

The trade-off
- It has a real and datable American history rather than a manufactured one.
- The z gives it a hardness that most 1890s revivals lack.
- It is short, two syllables, and completely unambiguous aloud.
- It has no meaning at all, and any source offering one is guessing.
- It was used for both sexes historically.
- Elsie is far more common and will be written instead.
