Pennie
Feminine · “Greek”
Pennie is Penny with the ending written the older way, and both are short for Penelope — a name whose own story is one of the most specific in Greek literature. Penelope waits twenty years and unpicks her weaving every night to avoid remarrying, which makes the meaning of her name genuinely disputed among people who have read the poem carefully.

The story of Pennie
Penelope was a rare literary name in English until the twentieth century, when it became fashionable and, as always, immediately produced a short form that outgrew it. Penny appears in the American data from the 1930s, becomes a top-hundred name in the 1950s and peaks in the early 1960s. Pennie is the -ie spelling of the same short form, tracking a few years behind. The choice between -y and -ie in that generation was largely regional and personal; both are recorded in the same families.

Greek, disputed: "weaver" or "duck"
Penelope's name has two competing derivations. One connects it to pēnē, the thread on a bobbin, which fits the weaving. The other connects it to pēnelops, a species of duck, and a tradition in which the infant Penelope was rescued from the sea by ducks. Ancient sources support both. The coin sense of penny is unrelated and is a separate English word from Old English penig.

The Bethel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Pennie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bethel climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bethel's path sketches the road Pennie is walking now.
Pennie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It reaches back to one of the most substantial characters in Greek literature.
- It is warm, short and requires no explanation.
- The -ie spelling has a period charm the -y spelling has lost.
- The coin is the first association for every English speaker.
- Penny is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
- It reads as a nickname, and the 1960s peak dates it.
