The story of Zina
Zenobia was the third-century queen of Palmyra who revolted against Rome and briefly ruled Egypt and much of the east. Zenaida was an early Christian saint, and Russian kept Zinaida with Zina as its short form. American families registered Zina in the nineteenth century, and it peaked around 1885.
Meaningscholars disagree
of Zeus, life
Two routes. Through the Greek Zenaida or Zenobia, built on Zen-, the oblique stem of Zeus. Or through the Greek zoe, 'life', which some sources connect. Russian Zinaida is the fuller form; Zina is its standard short form and a name in its own right.

The Diann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Diann climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Diann's path sketches the road Zina is walking now.
Zina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Zenobia behind it is one of the most striking figures of late antiquity.
- It is the standard short form in Russian, which gives it real international reach.
- Four letters, two syllables, and unlike anything else in a classroom.
- The parent name is genuinely ambiguous between two Greek routes.
- Zena and Xena are near-homophones with different origins.
- It is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth century in American records.
