Where it comes from

The story of Kristen

The import route explains the collision. Danish and Norwegian immigration brought the men's Kristen and Christen to the American Midwest in the nineteenth century, where it survived a generation or two. Separately, from the 1950s, American parents began taking up Scandinavian women's names — Kristin, Kirsten, Kari, Ingrid — and Kristen was absorbed into that group by spelling resemblance rather than by any Scandinavian precedent. The male curve peaks in 1975; the female curve peaks in 1982 at more than twenty times the height. Nothing about the name changed, only which set of names American parents were reading it against.

Meaning

Greek "anointed", by way of "Christian"

From Latin Christianus, a Christian, from Greek christos, anointed. Kristen is the Danish and Norwegian men's form, and Kristin the Norwegian and Swedish women's form; American use conflated them. The English verb to christen is the same word. In Scandinavia the two spellings still mark the sex; in America they do not.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kristen went to 10 boys in 2025, but Christen is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 20, which makes it the 908th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,771 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 85,404 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Kristen itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
