Where it comes from

The story of Knute

The English kn- cluster was ordinary in Old and Middle English and began simplifying in the sixteenth century, producing the modern silent letters in knight, knife, knee, knock and know. Spelling had already been fixed by print, so the letters stayed. The same happened to gn- in gnaw and gnat, and to wr- in write and wrong. Scandinavian languages kept the cluster, which is why Knut, Knud and Knute still begin with an audible k in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. American figures for Knute peak in 1893, with Norwegian immigration to the upper Midwest.

Meaning

Old Norse "knot"

From Old Norse Knútr, a knot, probably a byname. Canute the Great, king of England, Denmark and Norway, died in 1035 and is the best-known bearer. Knute is the Norwegian and American spelling; Knut is Norwegian and Swedish, Knud Danish. English speakers usually say NOOT, dropping the k as English does in its own words; Scandinavian speakers pronounce it.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and concrete, and the historical bearer is famous.
  • It is short and simple to write.
  • It carries a clear Scandinavian identity.
What to consider
  • English speakers drop the k, which Scandinavians hear as wrong.
  • Knut and Knud are the standard European spellings.
  • The 1890s peak dates a bearer strongly.
