The story of Obie
Spelling initials out as a name is a small but persistent English habit. The television Emmy is a softened form of Immy, from the image orthicon tube used in early cameras. Deejay, Veejay and Emcee are the same operation on job titles. In personal names it produces Jaycee, Kaydee, Elle, Dee, Bea and Obie, and it is more common in the American South, where registering initials as a legal name was itself an established practice into the twentieth century. The Obie figures peak in 1899, when that convention was at its height, and the name faded with it.

Initials read aloud, or a short form of Obadiah
Obie is either O. B. written out phonetically or a clipping of Obadiah, Hebrew ʿOvadyah, servant of Yah — the -iah being the abbreviated divine name that closes Isaiah and Jeremiah. Which applies varies by family. The Obie Awards for Off-Broadway theater, established in 1956, are named for the initials O. B.

Two syllables, stress on the first. It is the letters O and B said in sequence, which is why the spelling looks like a word and behaves like an abbreviation.
