Where it comes from

The story of Rance

The laurel's associations are Roman and specific. A triumphing general wore a laurel wreath; Apollo's tree was the laurel, and the Pythia at Delphi chewed its leaves; victors at the Pythian games were crowned with it. The word traveled into scholarship through medieval universities, where a graduate was crowned with laurel — hence laureate — and baccalaureus, from bacca lauri, the laurel berry, gave bachelor's degree and baccalaureate. Saint Lawrence, martyred in 258, carried the name into the Christian calendar. Rance as an American given name peaks in 1890.

Meaningscholars disagree

Latin "from Laurentum", probably the laurel town

Laurentius means a man of Laurentum, a town near Rome whose name is generally connected to laurus, the bay laurel, though the derivation is not certain. Rance is an American clip of Laurence or Ransom, or a surname in its own right. Which lies behind an individual bearer varies by family, and the name has no separate meaning.
