Where it comes from

The story of Early

Early was an English and Irish surname that became a given name in the American South in the nineteenth century, part of the same movement that produced Earl, Ervin and Elmore. Jubal Early, the Confederate general, made the surname widely known. It appears in the registers through the period and peaked around 1885.

Meaningscholars disagree

nobleman; eagle wood

Two routes for the surname. From eorl, 'nobleman' — the same word behind the title Earl — with a possessive ending. Or from a place name joining earn, 'eagle', to leah, 'wood' or 'clearing'. The modern English adjective 'early' is a different word and is not the source.

Early sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1927, with 88 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The eagle-wood reading is concrete and belongs to a large family of English place names.
  • Two documented traditions stand behind it.
  • Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk.
What to consider
  • It is a homophone of an ordinary English word that is not its source.
  • The origin is genuinely split between two readings.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth-century American South.
