The story of Doyle
Norse raiding and then settlement in Ireland ran from the late eighth century onward, and the Irish who lived alongside the newcomers named them by appearance. Families of Norse descent carried the byname into the surname system, giving Ó Dubhghaill — Doyle, MacDowell and Dougal all descend from it. Irish emigration made Doyle one of the commonest surnames in America, and it crossed into given-name use in the nineteenth century, peaking around 1920.

Irish annalists distinguished the Dubhghaill from the Fionnghaill, the dark and the fair strangers, and the terms are generally taken to mean Danish and Norwegian Vikings respectively.
