The story of Huston
The Manhattan street was named in the 1790s for William Houstoun, who married the daughter of the landowner whose farm the street crossed. The Georgia family said the name HOW-ston, and New Yorkers have preserved that pronunciation for two centuries while the rest of the country says HYOO-ston after the Texan city and Sam Houston. The Scottish original keeps a plain oo. Nothing is wrong in any of the three; they simply froze at different moments and in different mouths, which is what happens when a name travels without a central authority. The American given name Huston peaks in 1906.
Meaning
Scottish "Hugh's town"
From a village in Renfrewshire, Hugh's toun, named for Hugo de Padvinan, a twelfth-century landholder. Hugh is Germanic hug, mind or thought. The Texan city is named for Sam Houston; the Manhattan street for William Houstoun, a Georgia delegate, whose different spelling and Scottish family produced the different local pronunciation.
