Where it comes from

The story of Blain

Saint Blane was educated in Ireland and returned to Bute, where the ruins of a monastery bearing his name still stand; Dunblane in Perthshire is named for him. The name became a Scottish surname and traveled to America, where it entered the nineteenth-century fashion for surnames as given names. James G. Blaine, Speaker of the House, Secretary of State and the losing presidential candidate of 1884, gave the name national visibility — and the American figures for the Blain spelling peak in 1884 itself, which is a correlation in the curve rather than a claim about any family's reasons.

Gaelic "yellow" or from a personal name of uncertain sense

Blaine is from the Gaelic name Bláán, borne by a sixth-century bishop of Kingarth on Bute, and is often connected to blá, yellow, with a diminutive ending. The derivation is not settled. The English word blain, a blister or sore, is from Old English blegen and survives chiefly in chilblain; it is unrelated to the name and the shared spelling is a coincidence.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, easy to say and never mispronounced.
  • It has a documented Scottish saint and place behind it.
  • It is short without being a clipping of anything.
What to consider
  • Blaine is the more common spelling and will be substituted.
  • It shares its spelling with a word for a blister.
  • The Gaelic derivation is genuinely unsettled.
