The story of Tyrus
Tyre was one of the great trading cities of the ancient Mediterranean, famous for the purple dye that only it produced, and its name is in the Hebrew Bible, in Homer and in the Roman historians. Latin Tyrus is the form English inherited. Its American life as a given name is a separate matter: it appears in the records from the early twentieth century, when a very famous ballplayer christened Tyrus made the name briefly familiar, and it has been in quiet use since.
Meaningscholars disagree
of Tyre; rock
Latin Tyrus renders the Phoenician name of the city, itself from a Semitic word for a rock — the settlement was built on an island of stone. In modern American use the name is at least as often read as an extension of Ty or a variant of Tyree, in which case it carries no such meaning.
