The story of Lowell
Louvel came to England with the Normans as a byname and settled into the surnames Lovell and Lowell. One branch of the family became prominent in Massachusetts, producing merchants, poets and an astronomer, and the industrial city on the Merrimack was named for one of them in 1826. American families then took the surname as a given name — a common nineteenth-century practice — and Lowell stood in the top hundred and fifty for boys through the 1920s.
Meaning
little wolf
From the Norman French louvel, a diminutive of lou or loup, 'wolf', itself from the Latin lupus. Nicknames drawn from animals were ordinary in Norman naming, and the diminutive ending softened rather than reversed the sense.

The Angelo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lowell's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Angelo climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Angelo's path sketches the road Lowell is walking now.
Lowell sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
