Where it comes from

The story of Edric

Eadric was borne by Anglo-Saxon ealdormen and appears in the chronicles of the tenth and eleventh centuries. Like almost every English name of its type, it was swept aside after 1066 by the Norman stock of Williams and Roberts, and it survived only as a surname and in a few place names. Its return is recent and belongs to a broader revival of Anglo-Saxon names — Alfred, Edwin, Osric — among English-speaking families looking further back than the usual thousand years.

Meaning

rich ruler, fortunate king

From Old English ead, wealth or good fortune, and ric, a ruler or kingdom; the first element also opens Edward, Edmund and Edith, and the second closes Frederick and Roderick.

Edric sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2018, with 137 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Edric went to 36 boys in 2025, but Edrick and Edrik are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 137, which makes it the 791st most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,449 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 12,468 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 47,447 for Edric itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Anglo-Saxon name with both elements clearly attested.
  • Ed and Eddie are ready-made and require no negotiation.
  • Two syllables and five letters, easy to write and impossible to mispronounce.
What to consider
  • Edrick is also used, so the spelling will occasionally be asked for.
  • It is close enough to Eric and Cedric to be misheard.
  • A revived name from before the Conquest is unfamiliar to most people and will be asked about.
