Haydn
Masculine · “from the heath”
Haydn is given to both — 1,845 boys and 402 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Haydn is a composer's surname that Wales turned into a first name. The Welsh choral tradition of the nineteenth century took its heroes from the European canon, and boys were named Haydn, Handel and Mozart in the valleys in numbers that would have baffled Vienna. Haydn is the one that stuck, and its American peak is 2003.

The story of Haydn
Joseph Haydn, who died in 1809, wrote more than a hundred symphonies and effectively created the string quartet as a form. Welsh choral societies, which became a mass movement in the industrial valleys in the nineteenth century, sang his Creation constantly, and Welsh families named sons after the composers they sang: Haydn, Handel, Verdi and Mozart all appear in Welsh records. Haydn became a genuinely ordinary Welsh given name and remains one. In America the spelling is more often a variant of Hayden, which is a different name entirely, and the 2003 peak belongs to the general Hayden and Aiden fashion rather than to Wales.

from the heath
The German surname Haydn is generally derived from Heiden, which carries two related senses: a heath or moorland, and a heathen — a person of the heath, outside the settled Christian villages. The surname most likely means someone who lived on the heath. English speakers frequently assume a connection with the English name Hayden, which is a separate English surname from a place name meaning hay valley or hedged valley; the two are unrelated but have converged completely in American use.

The Marlowe test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Haydn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marlowe climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marlowe's path sketches the road Haydn is walking now.
Haydn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
