Where it comes from

The story of Newton

Isaac Newton is the reason boys were given this surname as a first name. Naming a child for a scientist rather than a saint or a soldier was a particular nineteenth-century enthusiasm, part of the same impulse that produced boys called Franklin and Darwin, and the birth records carry all three. The name has stayed rare but has never entirely disappeared.

Meaning

new town

From Old English niwe, 'new', and tun, 'settlement' or 'enclosure'. It is one of the commonest place names in England — there are dozens of Newtons — which is why the surname is so widespread.

Newton sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 203 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A completely transparent meaning that any English speaker can decode unaided.
  • It carries a scientist rather than a soldier or a saint, which is an unusual thing for a name to do.
  • One spelling, and the pronunciation follows directly from it.
What to consider
  • Newt is the inevitable short form and it is a small damp animal, which children will notice.
  • The name is bound tightly to one historical figure, so it will always be read as a tribute.
