Garner
Masculine · “a keeper of the granary”
Garner is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,279 boys against 59 girls since 1880.
Garner is an occupational surname about grain storage, and its American peak has a fair claim to a cause: John Nance Garner became Vice President in 1933, and the name's use on boys rises through the late 1920s and peaks in 1932, the year of his election. Whether or not that is the whole explanation, the timing is exact and the name has never been as common since.

The story of Garner
Both the occupational and the personal-name routes were live in medieval England, and the surname Garner is recorded from the thirteenth century. It traveled to America early and is common across the South and the Midwest. Its use as a given name follows the ordinary American pattern of promoting surnames, and it was well established before the 1930s. John Nance Garner of Texas, Speaker of the House and then Vice President under Franklin Roosevelt, was one of the most visible politicians in the country in exactly the years when the name's use peaks. The actor James Garner, born James Bumgarner, kept the name in circulation later.

a keeper of the granary
The likeliest source is Old French gernier or grenier, a granary, from Latin granarium — so the surname would name the man who kept it. A second derivation is possible and is taken seriously: the Germanic personal name Warinhari, from warin, 'guard', and hari, 'army', which came to England as Garnier and produced several surnames. Both are attested routes to the same modern spelling, and English surname dictionaries list them side by side.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Garner's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Osborne climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Osborne's path sketches the road Garner is walking now.
