The story of Stacy
Eustace was in ordinary English use from the Middle Ages, and its clipping Stacy served as a man's name into the twentieth century — a straightforward, unremarkable name in English and American records for four hundred years. The feminine use, arriving from Anastasia, overtook it in the 1960s and the masculine use fell away within a decade. The male peak came in the late 1950s, just before that turn.

fruitful, rich in grain
Read as short for Eustace, from the Greek eustachys — eu, 'well', and stachys, 'ear of grain' — so 'fruitful' or 'abundant'. Read instead as short for Anastasius or Anastasia, it is the Greek anastasis, 'resurrection'. Both were shortened the same way in English, and the short form does not choose.

The Randolph test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Stacy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Randolph climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Randolph's path sketches the road Stacy is walking now.
Stacy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
