The story of Eugenio
Eugenios was a Greek name that reached Latin as Eugenius and was carried by several popes and a number of early saints, which spread it across Catholic Europe. Italian and Spanish made Eugenio of it, Portuguese Eugénio, and French Eugène. It was very well used in Italy and Spain through the nineteenth century and reached American records with Italian and Hispanic emigration in the same period.

The trade-off
- A settled Greek meaning and a documented record reaching back to the early Church.
- Geno and Gene are both ready short forms, in two languages.
- Every letter is sounded, so Spanish and Italian speakers read it correctly at once.
- Italian and Spanish say the middle consonant differently, and both readings will follow him.
- Eugene is the English equivalent and reads as considerably older to Americans.
- Seven letters and four syllables is long for early handwriting.
