Christina and Christian spread through medieval Europe and took particular hold in Scandinavia, where Danish produced Kristen for men and Kirsten for women. American families borrowed the Scandinavian K forms heavily from the 1960s without the Danish distinction, and Kristen rose very fast for girls — into the American top forty by 1982, alongside Kristin, Kristina and Kirsten.
