The Jacobites are named after James. Jacobus is the Latin form, so the risings of 1715 and 1745 carry the king's name in a language he did not speak, and the adjective looks nothing like the name it comes from.

Where it comes from

The story of Jaymee

James VII of Scotland and II of England was deposed in 1688, and his supporters were called Jacobites, from Jacobus, the Latin form of his name used in official documents and on coinage. The label covered his cause for nearly sixty years, through the risings of 1689, 1715, 1719 and 1745, and it survives in Jacobite as a term of art for the whole movement, its music and its glassware. Nothing in the word resembles James, because Latin took the second of the two forms that developed from the Hebrew name, and English took the other. The same Latin form gives the Jacobean period, named for James I, and the Jacobin club of the French Revolution, which is named instead for a Dominican convent in Paris dedicated to Saint Jacques.

Meaning

Hebrew Yaakov, from aqev, the heel

Jaymee is a respelling of Jamie, the Scottish diminutive of James, from Latin Iacomus, a variant of Iacobus, from Hebrew Yaakov. The -ie ending is the Scots diminutive. In Scotland Jamie is a man's name; in American use the spelling is largely female. The peak of this spelling is 1992.

Jaymee sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1992, with 79 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaymee went to 10 girls in 2025, but Jaime, Jayme and Jaimee are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 65, which makes it the 895th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,562 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 24,727 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Jaymee itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
