The story of Jayme
The split is one of the tidier examples of a sound change with permanent consequences. The b of Iacobus weakened and became an m in spoken Latin in some regions, producing Iacomus, which is attested in late antique sources. Because both forms survived in writing, the two lines developed in parallel, and the church kept Iacobus for the patriarch while vernacular speech carried Iacomus for the apostle. English then borrowed both, from different routes, and now treats Jacob as an Old Testament name and James as a New Testament one — even though the New Testament Greek uses the same word for both. Jayme as an American girls' name peaks in 1985.
Meaning
Hebrew "heel-grabber" or "supplanter"
From Ya'aqov, glossed in Genesis by a pun on ʿaqev, a heel, from the account of Jacob grasping Esau's heel at birth. Latin Iacobus developed a variant Iacomus in late spoken Latin, and the two forms went separate ways: Iacomus gave Spanish Jaime, Italian Giacomo, French Jacques and English James, while Iacobus gave Jacob. Jayme is a modern American respelling of Jaime or Jamie.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jayme went to 14 girls in 2025, but Jaime, Jaymee and Jaimee are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 65, which makes it the 895th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,596 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 24,727 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Jayme itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
