Jaimee
Feminine · “he takes by the heel”
Jaimee is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 4,565 girls against 48 boys since 1880.
Two completely different names arrive at this sound. Jaime is Spanish and it is James — the Iberian form of the same Latin name that gave English James and French Jacques. Jamie is Scottish and it is also James, by an entirely separate road, as a diminutive. One name, two countries, two histories, and in America they collapse into a single spelling with a doubled e to mark a daughter.

The story of Jaimee
Spanish Jaime is a man's name and has been for a thousand years, carried by kings of Aragon. Scottish Jamie is a familiar form of James that became a name in its own right and, in the twentieth century, crossed to daughters in the English-speaking world. Both are present in American records, which is why this spelling is recorded for both sexes even though it is given overwhelmingly to girls. The doubled e is the American contribution: it fixes the final syllable as ee and marks the name as a daughter's, on the same principle as Aimee and Renee.

he takes by the heel, or may God protect
Both roads lead back to the Hebrew Ya'aqov. Genesis explains the name through the story of the twins and the heel; scholars of the ancient Near East read it instead as a shortened phrase meaning may God protect. Latin turned it into Iacobus and, in a variant, Iacomus — and that second form gave Spanish Jaime, French Jacques and English James.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaimee went to 6 girls in 2025, but Jaime, Jayme and Jaymee are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 65, which makes it the 895th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,313 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 24,727 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Jaimee itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Marilou test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaimee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marilou climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marilou's path sketches the road Jaimee is walking now.
Jaimee sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The doubled e fixes the final vowel and marks the name clearly on paper.

- The name behind it is among the most widely used on earth, in a dozen forms.
- It is recorded for boys as well as girls, which follows from its two separate origins.
- Jamie, Jaime and Jaimie all compete, and the spelling has to be dictated every time.
- In Spanish the same letters are a man's name said completely differently.
- It belongs to a particular stretch of American naming and dates a woman accordingly.
