Marilou
Feminine · “bitter”
Marilou keeps a stress on its second half, which most closed-up compounds lose. Say Suellen or Marlene and the back end falls away into a hum; say Marilou and the last syllable stays fully sounded, which is why the name reads as two names even written as one.

The story of Marilou
Compounding Mary with a second name is a habit two different traditions arrived at independently. In Quebec and French Canada, Marie-Louise, Marie-Claire and Marie-Ange were standard, hyphenated and said as a unit. In the American South, Mary Lou, Mary Beth and Mary Ann did the same job with the same logic and no hyphen. Where the two overlapped — in Louisiana, in New England mill towns, along the border — the closed spelling appears, and Marilou is the commonest of them. The single i in the middle is the French half showing through: English would have written Mary.

bitter, and famous warrior
The two halves come from Mary and Louise, and each has its own argued reading — Mary's is genuinely unsettled, and Louise carries a Germanic compound about fame and battle. A compound name means the two people it honors rather than the sum of two meanings.

Three syllables with the weight at the front and a real secondary stress at the back. That second stress is what keeps the name from collapsing into two syllables.

Fashion outlook
Marilou sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves are entirely familiar, so the whole is read correctly at sight.
- It carries three short forms, each a standing name somewhere.
- It works as one word on forms, which the open version does not.
- Mary Lou, Marylou and Marilou are all in the record and the space will be added and removed by turns.
- It reads as regional and generational, which some families want and others do not.
- The single i in the middle looks like a misspelling of Mary to English readers.
