Where it comes from
From Ya'aqov to Jaime
The story of Jaime
Jacob went into Greek as Iakobos and into Latin as Iacobus, which in late Latin softened to Iacomus — and every Western European form of James descends from that softened variant. Spanish took it to Jaime, Catalan to Jaume, Italian to Giacomo. The girls' name in the United States has a separate and much shorter history: Jamie was already in use as a feminine name, and the Spanish spelling was borrowed for it because it looked more finished on paper, which is why the name reads one way in Madrid and another in Ohio.
Meaning
heel-holder, supplanter
Through the Spanish reading, Jaime descends from Jacob — Hebrew Ya'aqov, explained in Genesis by the account of a twin born gripping his brother's heel, and used from there in the sense of one who supplants. Read instead as a spelling of Jamie, it arrives at the same root by a longer road, since Jamie is a short form of James and James is Jacob too.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaime went to 35 girls in 2025, but Jayme, Jaymee and Jaimee are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 65, which makes it the 895th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,172 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 24,727 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 45,922 for Jaime itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Ann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaime's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ann climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ann's path sketches the road Jaime is walking now.
Jaime sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a real name in two large languages rather than a coinage, so it has documented history in both.
- Short, evenly stressed, and easy to say in either reading once the reading is known.
- It works across the sexes, which is useful in families who want that latitude.
- The two pronunciations are far apart and neither is wrong, so the name will be corrected often.
- In Spanish-speaking contexts the spelling reads as unambiguously masculine.
