The story of Peace
Pax was a Roman goddess with a temple and an altar, and the Pax Romana named a political condition rather than a feeling. English took peace in the twelfth century, chiefly in the legal and political sense — the king's peace was a real jurisdiction. The inner sense came later. Puritan naming took Peace as a virtue name, and it returned to American records from the 2010s.
Meaning
peace, concord
From Latin pax, a compact or agreement, related to a verb meaning to fasten or settle; the sense of inner calm is a much later development. The same root gives pact and appease.

The Jalene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Peace's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jalene climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jalene's path sketches the road Peace is walking now.
Peace sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Peace is headed
Peace should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- An ordinary English word, so nobody has to be taught to say or spell it.
- A settled meaning with a genuinely interesting legal and political history.
- Five letters and one syllable, quick to write.
- It sounds identical to piece, which will cause confusion in writing.
- A virtue name sets an expectation the child did not choose.
- A one-syllable name gives no room for a nickname.
