Where it comes from

The story of Jamira

Mira, the star Omicron Ceti, was recorded as variable by David Fabricius in 1596 and named Mira, the wonderful, by Johannes Hevelius half a century later; before that, European astronomy held that the heavens did not change, so a star that came and went was a serious problem as well as a curiosity. The word mira separately gives Spanish its ordinary verb for looking, and appears as a name in Sanskrit and across the Slavic languages from entirely different roots. American naming took the sound as an ending and prefixed it, giving Jamira, Damira and Tamira. Jamira's best year in United States records is 2006.

Not established

The -mira ending has more than one available source. Latin mira is the feminine of mirus, wonderful or astonishing, and is the name of the first known variable star. Spanish mira is the imperative of mirar, to look. Sanskrit and Slavic names Mira, meaning ocean and peace respectively, are separate again. The Ja- prefix is a free American naming element with no meaning, and the compound as a whole has none.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jamira went to 17 girls in 2025, but Jamirah and Jamyra are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 41, which makes it the 919th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,627 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 39,202 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Jamira itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

  • The rhythm matches Elmira and Samira, so it never sounds unfamiliar.
  • Six letters and no silent ones.
What to consider
  • Two pronunciations circulate for the middle syllable.
  • Jamira, Jameera and Jamera all appear in the records.
  • The name as a whole has no meaning; only its ending does.
