Jamirah is a men's coinage made female, and the machinery is visible. Jamir appeared in American boys' naming in the 1990s, built from Ja- and the -mir ending of Amir; adding -ah is the standard English move for making any name female. The name is therefore two derivations deep and neither step involved a dictionary.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jamirah

Feminising by adding -a or -ah is one of the oldest moves in European naming — Paul gives Paula, Julius gives Julia, Robert gives Roberta — and it works because those languages had grammatical gender to borrow from. English does not, so the ending is purely conventional: it means female because English names that end that way are female, and for no other reason. What is new is applying it to a name that was itself invented a decade earlier. Jamir, coined around 1990, becomes Jamirah around 2000; the source name has no history, so the derived name inherits none, and the -ah at the end is doing all of the work of signaling anything at all. Jamirah peaked in 2003, one decade after its parent.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Amir is Arabic for a commander or prince, from the root ʾ-m-r, and that etymology is settled for Amir itself. Jamir is not an Arabic name; it is an American formation using Ja- plus the back of Amir. Jamirah adds an English feminine ending to that. Nothing survives two steps of reconstruction, and glossing Jamirah as princess would be inventing a chain that does not exist.

Jamirah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 68 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jamirah went to 15 girls in 2025, but Jamira and Jamyra are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 41, which makes it the 919th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,214 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 39,202 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Jamirah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mira is available as a short form with real history in several languages.
  • The rhythm matches Samira and Amira, so nobody hesitates over it.
  • It is genuinely rare while sounding entirely current.
What to consider
  • It has no meaning, and the Arabic Amir does not carry across two derivations.
  • It will be confused with Jamila, Samira and Amira, which are real Arabic names.
  • The construction dates it to the early 2000s.
