Where it comes from

Our story of Jamyra

Myra was a city on the Lycian coast, with a rock-cut necropolis and a theater that are still standing, and its bishop in the early fourth century was Nicholas, whose reputation for secret gift-giving traveled through Byzantium to Russia, the Netherlands and eventually to an American poem of 1823 that fixed the modern figure. The city's own name is Lycian and its meaning is lost. Fulke Greville, writing love poetry in Elizabethan England, used Myra for his subject, and English took the name from him rather than from the map. American naming then did what it does: treated the two syllables as material, attached the Ja- prefix that was productive in the 1990s and 2000s, and produced Jamyra, which has a Turkish city, a Christmas saint and an Elizabethan courtier standing behind it in a line none of them would have recognized.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Jamyra is an American formation joining the Ja- prefix to Myra. Myra was coined in the seventeenth century by the poet Fulke Greville, apparently as a rearrangement of Mary or from the Lycian city of Myra; neither is documented as his intention. The compound carries no meaning; the peak is 2008.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jamyra went to 9 girls in 2025, but Jamira and Jamirah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 41, which makes it the 919th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,188 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 39,202 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Jamyra itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
