Where it comes from

The story of Ellaina

The story appears in Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur as the Fair Maid of Astolat, who loves Lancelot, is refused, and dies; her body is placed in a barge with a letter explaining herself and floats down the river to Arthur's court. Tennyson published The Lady of Shalott in 1832 and revised it in 1842, changing the setting to a tower and a mirror and a curse, and the poem became one of the most illustrated in English: Waterhouse painted it three times, Holman Hunt and Rossetti once each. Tennyson also retold the Malory version directly as Lancelot and Elaine in the Idylls of the King. The two versions have merged in general memory. What survives in both is the image of a woman carried downstream, which is why the name arrives in English with a very specific picture attached.

Greek Helene, of unknown meaning

Ellaina is an American formation on Elaine or Elena. Elaine is the Old French form of Helen, whose own meaning is genuinely unknown; the derivations from a word for torch or for the moon are guesses. Elena is the Italian and Spanish form of the same name. The peak is 2011.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
