Elayna
Feminine · “Uncertain”
Elayna stands at the end of a very long line — the Greek Helenē, the Old French Elaine of Arthurian romance, the Elena of Italy and Spain. The spelling is modern and American; the sound in it is old enough to have crossed several languages before reaching English. Three syllables that open wide in the middle and land softly.

From Helenē to Elayna
The story of Elayna
The line begins with Greek Helenē, which passed into Latin as Helena and spread across Europe — Elena in Italian and Spanish, Yelena in Russian, Helena in German and Polish. Old French romance reshaped it into Elaine, the form that reached English through Arthurian storytelling: Elaine of Astolat appears in Malory's fifteenth-century Le Morte d'Arthur, and Tennyson brought her back to a wide readership in the nineteenth century. Elaine gave rise to Elaina, and Elayna is an American respelling of that — the same name written so the middle syllable can only be read one way. It is a young spelling on an ancient frame.

Uncertain; usually linked to Greek helenē, "torch", and so read as "bright" or "shining"
Elayna is a spelling of Elaine/Elaina, which descend from Greek Helenē — and the meaning of Helenē has never been settled. The most widely repeated reading connects it to helenē, "torch", giving "bright, shining". A second tradition among scholars ties it to selēnē, "moon". A third holds that the name is pre-Greek and simply older than any Greek word offered to explain it. All three are seriously argued; none has won.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elayna went to 171 girls in 2025, but Elaina, Elainna and Ellaina and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 1,387, which makes it the 239th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,060 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,159 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,399 for Elayna itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Stanley test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elayna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stanley climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stanley's path sketches the road Elayna is walking now.
Elayna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The spelling tells people how to say it — the middle syllable can only be read one way, which Elena and Elaina cannot claim.
- Comes with short forms already in circulation: Ellie, Lainey, Layna, Elle.
- Sits on a documented line running from Greek through Latin and Old French into English, with living cousins in Italian, Spanish, Russian, German and Hungarian.
- Every element of it is familiar — no new sounds, no unfamiliar letters — while the full spelling stays uncommon.
- It will be respelled for life. Elaina, Elayne, Alayna, Alaina and Elena are all in use, and most people default to one of them unless told. Expect to spell it out on forms and coffee cups.
- Spoken aloud, it is nearly indistinguishable from Alayna and Alaina. If a classmate or colleague carries one of those, the two names will be mixed up in conversation.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled. If you want a name whose translation you can state in one clean sentence, this is not that name — though it is in good company, since Helen has puzzled scholars for centuries.
- She is unlikely to meet another Elayna, which cuts both ways: no shared name in the classroom, but also no instant recognition of the spelling from strangers.
