Sonia
Feminine · “wisdom”
Sonia is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 66,747 girls against 279 boys since 1880.
Sonia began as an affectionate short form of Sofia in Russian, and then did what few pet names manage: it left home and became a full name in its own right, carried into English, Spanish, Italian and Scandinavian use. Readers met it in nineteenth-century Russian novels — Sonya in both War and Peace and Crime and Punishment — and it has been given to daughters in the United States ever since, with a long, steady run rather than a sudden fashion.

The story of Sonia
The Greek word sophía, wisdom, gave the name Sophia, honored early in the Christian East and carried into Russian as Sofya. Russian speakers shortened Sofya to Sonya, and it was in that shortened shape that the name traveled: into Scandinavia as Sonja, into Spanish, Italian and Portuguese as Sonia, into English through the great nineteenth-century Russian novels, where Sonya appears in both War and Peace and Crime and Punishment. American records show it in use since the closing years of the nineteenth century, and its strongest footing today is in California, Texas and New York — states where Spanish-speaking, Slavic and South Asian families have all kept the name in circulation, each with their own way of saying it.
Meaning

Sonia inherits its meaning from Sofia, which comes from the Greek sophía, wisdom. The Sonia form itself is affectionate rather than descriptive — a nickname that grew up.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Laverne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sonia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Laverne climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Laverne's path sketches the road Sonia is walking now.
Sonia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds in English, and short enough to fit on any form or nametag.
- Works in Spanish, Italian, Russian, Polish, German and Scandinavian without translation or explanation.
- Over a century of unbroken use in American records, so it reads as familiar rather than invented.
- Connects to Sofia if a longer, more formal version is ever wanted.
- Sonia, Sonya and Sonja all sound nearly identical, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often — and to receive mail with the other two spellings.
- The two pronunciations, SOH-nee-uh and SOHN-yah, both travel with the name. Neither is wrong, but you will be correcting one of them regularly.
- Most Sonias in the United States today are middle-aged or older, so the name currently reads as a grown woman's name rather than a schoolyard one — and a child would likely be the only Sonia in her grade.
