Kaycee
Feminine · “From the Irish word cathasach”
Kaycee is given to both — 8,654 girls and 530 boys since 1880. See Kaycee as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Kaycee writes down, letter by letter, something Americans have done for well over a century: taking a pair of initials — K.C. — and saying them as a name. Behind that sound sits Casey, an Irish surname that crossed the Atlantic and turned into a first name on this side of it. Two syllables, both open, no hard edges anywhere in it.

The story of Kaycee
Casey began as Ó Cathasaigh, an Irish family name built on cathasach, "vigilant". Irish emigration carried the surname into the United States in the nineteenth century, where — as happened to Kelly, Ryan and Riley — it slipped loose from families and became a first name given to children directly. From there it split into a whole family of spellings: Casey, Kasey, Kacey, Kaci, Kacie and Kaycee among them. Kaycee is the version that also answers to the American habit of calling a child by their initials, and it has held a place on the US girls' charts for decades without ever crowding it.

From the Irish word cathasach, "vigilant, watchful" — if read as a form of Casey
Two roads meet at this spelling. Read as a respelling of Casey, it goes back to the Irish surname Ó Cathasaigh, from cathasach, "vigilant" or "watchful". Read as a written-out K.C., it is a set of initials given a name's shape, and carries no dictionary meaning at all. Both are genuinely in play, and plenty of families have used it without deciding between them.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kaycee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jann climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- Reads exactly as it sounds. A stranger seeing it in print will say it correctly on the first try.
- Has been on the US charts continuously across many decades, never scarce and never everywhere.
- Comes with Kay ready-made — a short form that has stood alone as a given name for generations.
- Belongs to a large, familiar name family, so the sound is instantly recognizable even where the spelling isn't.
- The sound is easy; the spelling is not. Casey, Kasey, Kacey, Kaci and Kacie all sound identical, so expect a lifetime of "Kaycee — K-A-Y-C-E-E" on forms and phone calls.
- Casey and Kasey are given to boys as well as girls in the US. People who hear the name before seeing it may picture a different spelling, or a boy, until they meet her.
- There is no longer, formal version underneath it. Kaycee is the full name and the casual name at once, which some families like and others miss on a diploma.
