The story of Stanley
He was born illegitimate in north Wales, spent his childhood in a workhouse, worked his passage to New Orleans, and there acquired the surname of a merchant he later claimed had adopted him, which the merchant's family denied. He fought on both sides in the American civil war, became a journalist, and was sent to find a missionary who was not lost. The greeting he reported making is not in his contemporary diary, whose relevant pages were removed. His expeditions were extraordinarily violent even by the standards of the period and his later work for the Belgian king in the Congo has a reputation that has only worsened with time. He is one of the clearest cases in which a very famous name attaches to a life almost entirely constructed by its owner.
