Our story of Liliane
Ours, offered as ours. The fleur-de-lis was the emblem of the French crown for six centuries and it is a stylized lily — or possibly an iris, which scholars have argued about for a very long time. It appears on the arms of English kings too, since they claimed France. The same flower stood for the Virgin in every Annunciation painted between 1300 and 1600. Few plants have done so much symbolic work.
Meaning
lily
From Latin lilium, the lily, itself probably borrowed from an eastern Mediterranean language. French added the -iane ending. The flower carried associations of purity in Christian art and of royalty in French heraldry.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Liliane went to 29 girls in 2025, but Lilyanne, Lillianne and Lillyanne and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 160, which makes it the 800th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,861 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 10,045 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 55,423 for Liliane itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- A settled meaning in a flower with an enormous symbolic record.
- Lili is a complete short form with its own record.
- Every vowel is sounded, so it reads correctly in most languages.
- The French and American pronunciations differ substantially.
- Liliane, Lilianne, Lilian and Lillian are all in use and get confused.
- Seven letters and three syllables is a fair amount for early handwriting.
