The story of Lilianne
Lilian was in English use from the Tudor period and rose sharply in the late nineteenth century with the general fashion for flower names — Lily, Rose, Violet, Daisy, Iris. French produced Liliane and Lilianne, adding the -ane and -anne endings that French uses to make women's names. American records show Lillian at a great height around 1900 and again since 2005, and the French spellings sit at the margins of both waves; Lilianne peaks in 2011, inside the modern revival, in families reaching for a French look on a familiar name.

Lily; or a pet form of Elizabeth
Lilian appears in English from the sixteenth century, and two derivations compete. One takes it from Latin lilium, the lily, a flower with strong Marian associations in Christian art. The other treats it as a diminutive of Elizabeth by way of Lillie, from Hebrew ʾĔlîšebaʿ, my God is an oath. Neither is established, and the two have influenced each other for four hundred years. The -anne ending is a French elaboration.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Lis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lilianne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lis climbed just as high around 1961, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lis's path sketches the road Lilianne is walking now.
Lilianne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
