Where it comes from

Our story of Lillianne

Ours, offered as ours. The lily is one of the few flowers with a fixed job in European art: in every Annunciation the angel carries one, and the convention is old enough that painters could rely on it being read without explanation. Whether Lillian descends from that or from Elizabeth is genuinely unsettled — the early bearers sit suspiciously close to Elizabeths in the parish records. Lillianne with the -anne ending is the most French-looking of the modern spellings and the newest.

Meaningscholars disagree

lily

Lillian is read either as an elaboration of Lily, from Latin lilium, or as a development of a medieval pet form of Elizabeth. The competing accounts are both serious and neither has won.

Lillianne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2013, with 69 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lillianne went to 33 girls in 2025, but Lilyanne, Liliane and Lillyanne and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 160, which makes it the 800th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,465 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 10,045 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 48,705 for Lillianne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lilli and Anne are both complete names in their own right.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
  • The flower behind it is real and easy to explain to a child.
What to consider
  • Lillian is the standard spelling and will be written for her constantly.
  • Ten letters is a great deal for early handwriting.
  • The origin is genuinely argued between the flower and Elizabeth.
