The story of Hyacinth
Hyakinthos was a young man loved by Apollo and killed by a discus, and the flower is said to have sprung from his blood — but the -nth in his name marks him as pre-Greek, which means he was probably a local deity absorbed and demoted when Greek speakers arrived. The same ending appears in Corinth, labyrinth and terebinth. The name was used in English from the Victorian period.
